How much does a bootstrapped solo founder earn in year 8?

By Brightiny9·Published Oct 15, 2026

Michael Lynch's year 8 as a solo founder: $16.3k revenue, $8.2k profit (his claim, 2026-02-03). Eight years of figures and what small makers can take.

Not much, in this one case. Michael Lynch reports $16.3k in revenue and $8.2k in profit for his eighth year, 2025 (his own count, checked 2026-10-16). About 72% of that revenue came from pre-selling one book (our calculation). Only the Kickstarter part has a third-party check.

Years 1 to 6 are mostly TinyPilot, a hardware product he later sold. Year 7 is the year he sold it (April 2024) and took paternity leave. Year 8 is a book. For year 3, the post lists profit per business line and no total; the four lines we saw sum to -$495 (our calculation, checked 2026-10-16), but we cannot tell that they cover everything, so we call it unclear. "No figure published" means the page had no such number when we looked (checked 2026-10-16). None of these numbers has third-party confirmation.

What did the eighth year actually earn from?

Mostly the book. The author says the book, Refactoring English, brought in $11.8k from pre-sales and early access, including about $6k from Kickstarter, and that 422 readers bought early access (checked 2026-10-16, Year 8 post↗). He also reports $100-200 a month (checked 2026-10-16) from a legacy business he does not touch. Expenses he lists include $2.1k of computer hardware and $1.9k of LLM costs (checked 2026-10-16).

"In total, I had $8.2k in profit on $16.3k in revenue." (source↗, 2026-02-03)

Our calculation: $11.8k divided by $16.3k is about 72% (checked 2026-10-16). So roughly three of every four revenue dollars in year 8 came from one unfinished product. The same post says: "I originally thought I'd finish the book in six months, but I'm 13 months in and still have about 20% left."

Can anyone confirm the numbers?

Partly, and only for one line. The tracker Kicktraq lists the Kickstarter project at $6,551 pledged from 191 backers, against a $5,000 goal, March 7 to March 31 (Kicktraq↗, checked 2026-10-16). That fits his "about $6k" claim. It is the only third-party check we found.

Revenue, profit, the 422 early-access buyers and the legacy income are not confirmed. We found no Stripe-verified page or TrustMRR listing for him. Treat them as his word. The figures we compared did not contradict each other, except the year 6 text against its table.

How do the years compare?

Our calculations, from the figures in the first table:

MeasureMethodResultChecked
Profit margin, year 4$14,518 / $478,6383.0%2026-10-16
Profit margin, year 5$5,979 / $812k0.7%2026-10-16
Profit margin, year 6$235,568 / $992,59723.7%2026-10-16
Profit margin, year 8$8.2k / $16.3k50.3%2026-10-16
Revenue, year 8 vs year 6$16.3k / $992,5971.6%2026-10-16
Profit, year 8 vs year 6$8.2k / $235,5683.5%2026-10-16
Year 8 profit vs his $50k goal$8.2k / $50k16.4%2026-10-16

Three things stand out.

First, margin and size moved in opposite directions. With $812k in revenue in year 5 he kept $5,979. With $16.3k in year 8 he kept about half (checked 2026-10-16). Our guess is that a hardware product carries inventory and parts costs a book does not; we did not check his expense lines for this. The year 5 post says: "I don't pay myself a salary, so $6k is the full amount I earned from the business in 2022." So the $5,979 is also what he earned.

Second, one year dominates the total. Adding the six years with a stated profit (years 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 8; -$20,871, -$2,402, $14,518, $5,979, $235,568, $8,200) gives about $240,992 (checked 2026-10-16). Year 6 alone is $235,568, which is 97.7% of that sum. Years 3 and 7 are missing, so this is a partial total, not his lifetime profit.

Third, rank. The year 8 post says "2025 was my fourth most profitable year as a founder." Among the years with a published profit, year 8 ranks third, behind years 6 and 4. So his count fits only if year 7 beat $8.2k (checked 2026-10-16). He published no year 7 figure, so we cannot check it.

One more check. The year 5 post says revenue grew 76% from 2021. Dividing $812k by his $478,638 total gives 69.6%. Dividing by his $459,529 of TinyPilot sales gives 76.7% (checked 2026-10-16). So the 76% appears to use product sales only (our inference).

What he wrote about his own work

He wrote that he can still only write about an hour a day, and he marks the book as fine on enjoyment, competence, work-life balance and fit with him as a user. Profitability is the one criterion with a warning mark.

"I can still only write for about an hour per day." (source↗, 2026-02-03)

"I found a business that aligns with me." (source↗, 2026-02-03)

Our reading: if one hour a day is the real cap, the book's output depends on very few hours. He graded his own goals too. The $50k profit goal got a D (he earned $8.2k), and finishing the book got a C (about 80% done). His 2026 goal is $75k in profit, which is 9.1 times year 8's $8.2k (our calculation, $75k / $8.2k, checked 2026-10-16).

What is the survivor bias here?

We see a founder who publishes every year and had one year with $235k profit (checked 2026-10-16). Makers whose businesses failed rarely write eight annual posts, so this record shows what a good outcome looks like, not what is typical.

What should a small maker take from this?

  • Publish the numbers, even small ones, and link a check. The $16.3k year is the most useful one in the series, because it shows what a solo year looks like after the big win. Add a link a reader can open, such as a Stripe-verified revenue page or a TrustMRR↗ profile, so the claim is not only your word. (checked 2026-10-16)
  • Pre-sell before you finish. His campaign pledged $6,551 from 191 backers, March 7 to 31 (Kicktraq, checked 2026-10-16). If you can sell the idea first, you learn demand before you spend a year.
  • Watch margin, not just revenue. Year 5 shows $812k of revenue can leave $5,979 (checked 2026-10-16). A small product with fewer costs can keep half.
  • Plan for slow writing speed. Pick the daily cap of the work you do (his is one hour) and set the project length from that, not from hope. His six-month plan became 13 months and counting.
  • Do not copy the one huge year. Year 6 is 97.7% of the known profit. Judge a path by the whole series.

How we researched this

Researched from public sources on 2026-10-16. We did not test these products hands-on. We opened the eight posts and the Kicktraq page with a fetch tool that returns a summary of each page. On 2026-10-16 we compared the three quotes above with the year 8 post, and they match the original text. The other figures come from summaries, so a digit could be wrong; the claims about the 13 months, the goal grades, the scorecard, year 5 salary and the year 1 loss were each checked against their posts the same way. We did not contact the author. Calculations marked "our calculation" use the figures in the first table and are rounded. The year 6 post gives $997k in text and $992,597 in its table; we used the table figure.
