Is "$18K a month" the same as MRR? Voicy's two numbers
By Brightiny9Published
A solo founder's headline says $18K a month. Payment-linked data shows $12.2K recurring and $17.7K over 30 days, a gap he ties to lifetime deals.
No, not here. A Starter Story headline says the Voicy dictation app makes $18K a month. TrustMRR's payment-linked page, checked 2026-10-16, shows $12,210 of recurring revenue and $17,744 collected in 30 days. The founder ties the gap to lifetime deals.
| Number | Value | Source | Date | Who stands behind it |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Headline | "$18K/month" | Starter Story | 2026-10-14 | Founder, interview |
| MRR said in the interview | $11,000 | same page | 2026-10-14 | Founder, interview |
| Monthly total said in the interview | $16,000 to $20,000 | same page | 2026-10-14 | Founder, interview |
| MRR on the revenue page | $12,210 | TrustMRR | synced 2026-10-15 | Payment-provider data |
| Last 30 days on the revenue page | $17,744 | TrustMRR | synced 2026-10-15 | Payment-provider data |
| Total revenue to date | $188,390 | TrustMRR | synced 2026-10-15 | Payment-provider data |
What did the founder actually say?
He separated the two numbers himself. In the interview (Starter Story, 2026-10-14) he says:
"We're at 11K MRR but on a monthly basis we make anywhere from like 16 to 20K." (Starter Story, 2026-10-14)
His next sentence gives the reason: the company sells lifetime deals. So the $18K headline (2026-10-14) is not a lie. It is the monthly total, one-time sales included. The risk is in the reading: many people see "$18K/month" and assume it repeats every month without effort.
Do the numbers fit together?
Mostly, within the limits of what is public. All checks below are our own arithmetic, done on 2026-10-16 from the figures above.
- Headline versus data. The 30-day figure of $17,744 (synced 2026-10-15) sits inside his $16,000 to $20,000 range and next to the $18K headline.
- Recurring share. $12,210 divided by $17,744 is about 69% (figures synced 2026-10-15). The other 31%, $5,534, is not monthly recurring revenue.
- Lifetime sales, as a rough estimate. The Voicy pricing page lists a $260 lifetime plan (checked 2026-10-16). If the whole $5,534 gap came from lifetime sales, that is about 21 sales in 30 days. Treat it as a rough guess: how annual plans are billed, refunds and how TrustMRR counts one-time payments could all move the gap, and we could not confirm any of them.
- Price per subscription. TrustMRR shows 1,503 active subscriptions, so MRR per subscription is $12,210 divided by 1,503, about $8.12 (synced 2026-10-15). The pricing page lists Pro at $8.49 a month (checked 2026-10-16). The average sits slightly under list price, so some subscribers pay less. The page also lists a 20% disability discount, and a 20% cut from $8.49 is $6.79 (our calculation). We could not confirm how many subscribers use it, so we do not estimate the mix.
What does a lifetime deal change for a small maker?
Cash arrives now; cost stays. At $8.49 a month, $260 equals about 31 months of subscription (our calculation, pricing checked 2026-10-16). A buyer who stays three years pays about the same as a subscriber. A buyer who stays longer is cheaper than a subscriber. The founder says he runs this as a side project next to a full-time job, so the support and server cost of those buyers does not shrink when the sale is over.
That makes the numbers answer different questions (figures synced 2026-10-15):
| Question | Use this number |
|---|---|
| Can I plan hiring or ads from it? | Recurring revenue ($12,210 here, 2026-10-15) |
| Is the product selling right now? | 30-day total ($17,744 here, 2026-10-15) |
| Did this person ever make real money? | Total to date ($188,390 here, 2026-10-15) |
How should you read a "$X a month" headline?
Ask four things before you copy the plan:
- Recurring or total? If lifetime deals or one-time sales exist, the two numbers differ.
- Who measured it? Interview numbers are claims. Payment-linked data is stronger. TrustMRR says founders connect their payment provider so revenue comes "straight from the source" (TrustMRR, checked 2026-10-16). We could not find how it treats one-time payments.
- When was it last synced? This page synced on 2026-10-15, one day before our check. A stale page tells you little.
- Who is missing? We only see apps that did well enough to be interviewed. We have no count of similar apps that charged a similar price and did not.
What this article cannot tell you
We did not use the app, so we say nothing about quality. Daily users (about 2,500), monthly users (about 10,000) and 1,400 subscriptions are the founder's interview claims (2026-10-14), not verified; TrustMRR counts 1,503 subscriptions a day later, a gap of about 7%. We have no data on churn, refunds or lifetime-plan sales counts. The "solo" and "side project" descriptions are his own.
How we researched this
Researched from public sources on 2026-10-16: the Starter Story page, the TrustMRR page, TrustMRR's about page and the Voicy pricing page. We did not test the product. We have no tie to Voicy, Starter Story or TrustMRR, and there are no affiliate links.
